Campania

Pompeii

Pompeii was a large Roman city in Campania which was buried in volcanic ash following the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Buildings were destroyed, the population crushed or asphyxiated, and the city buried beneath a blanket of ash and pumice covering it in at least 19 feet (6 metres) of ash and other volcanic debris. The city's quick burial preserved it for centuries before its ruins were discovered in the late 16th century.  Excavated in the 19th-20th century, its excellent state of preservation gives an invaluable insight into Roman everyday life.
